The Whiting section of Manchester was named in 1861 by Nathan C. Whiting. He came from New Haven, Connecticut and erected a sawmill. The first post office and church were built in1841. In 1871, Whiting sold some lands to the New Jersey Southern Railroad Co., and was then known as Whiting Junction. This land became the railroad hub for the central section of New Jersey.
